There are 3 keys to getting open for a pass:
I often see new coaches focus too much on creating separation, and not enough on positioning and timing.
The clip below from our Handler Offense (presented by Spin Ultimate) video package does a great job teaching the idea of where and how to position yourself as a reset cutter in a vert stack.
0:41 - I love how Ben gives a tangible, teachable way to understand the shapes and spacing. He talks about creating cutting options, which is key to forcing defenders to choose which option they will take away.
2:11 - Rather than putting out cones for where to start, Ben chooses to train the habit of getting to the right position by randomizing where the disc starts from. This is SUPER game-realistic. Coaches should always be trying to teach game-realistic habits, not just having players 'run drills'.
2:52 - Classic teachable moment here. Rather than saying, 'that's wrong, you should be here', Ben reminds about the 'why' behind what's being learned and gives the player a chance to correct themself. This becomes an opportunity to learn for everyone AND empowers the player to make a decision themselves, rather than just taking orders.
